Then & Now: Hilton Logo

When I first visited Europe in 1997, I had an uncle who used to work for the Hilton property in Mainz, Germany -- the one right by the river Rhine. With his employee rate, most of my hotel stays throughout my trip were spent in a Hilton brand. I don't know why, but most of the time, we ended up staying at one of their properties near the airport. I guess that's because they are cheaper. Hehe.

Anyway, since I don't have a lot of blog-worthy pics from this trip I took more than 10 years ago, let us just look at how the logo of the brand has evolved from "Then 'til Now" -- courtesy of the hotel stationery I've cut out for my trip scrapbook :-)

Apologies for the quality of the pictures -- 1997 ancient "artifacts" taken with an iPhone. Hehe.

Lastly, here is their old logo printed on one of their key cards "side-by-side" with their new logo I took from their website.

I, sort of, prefer the older logo. What about you?

  1. Neither is that great, IMHO. Hilton used to have two logos if I recall correctly. The one you posted was their Hilton International logo, whereas Hiltons in the US had a script-like logo.

To me the "new" logo has always looked dated. Plus, it doesn't really seem to convey a classy hotel chain; instead it screams "family vacation" to me. That would be great if that was their focus, but I assume Hilton wants to have a wider reach.

  2. Agree. Now that you mentioned it, the logo sort of reminds me of Orlando, Florida :-)

  3. Thank you very much for this blog entry. I was trying to figure out when Hilton changed their logo (logotype) while publishing an article on hotel matchboxes (which I used to collect for many years); and your post provided me with a hint where the corporate Hilton website left me without any further help. I can only pin it down to the late 80s, early 90s, but that is a start. (Sadly the matchbox in question is a generic Hilton International one and thus does not show any address etc.)

  4. I don't know exactly how my post helped but glad to have done so :-)

Anyway, great match collection. My dad also does the same. Maybe I'll find old hotel/airline (yep, he has stories of smoking in the plane) logos in his pile. Thanks for the idea :-)
